Honestly, I don't think the anti AI movement really hinges on any of these arguments. People don't like change (status quo bias and all that). The looming future of AI overlords running society scares people, so they're grasping at straws to justify their opposition.
Yeah I think the environmental argument in particular betrays that it's less that they care about the environment, and more that they hate AI. It's probably because of the sudden change, the fact that it's forced on them everywhere, and it's popular among the ultra wealthy. An understandable reaction, but I feel like the points don't hold much water. Thanks for the kind words!
I’m actually practicing to become an artist at the moment (self teaching). AI art certainly has its place, but it’s far too wishy washy if you want something very specific. And if you try to get something very specific you end up spending hours slaving over it anyway.
Most online image software won't let you do anything " controversial " either. If I had to do a scene depicting even implied violence ( Doomsday & Superman duking it out, Thanos erasing people from reality, a vampire biting a victim, Spock & Khan duking it out from Star Trek Into Darkness, etc. ) I'd be out of luck with most of the AI graphics out there.
If I had to reproduce a scene from Grimm's Fairy Tales, likewise. I can't tell if it's a copyright issue or just wanting to keep things PG / PG - 13 or a combination of both.
Brilliantly argued, as usual.

Though, it’s very good for inspiration.
I use AI art in my Substack. If you are asking whether it’s moral to use AI art, you have to look at what the alternatives are.
I could steal the random images that Google search finds. Not good.
I could pay £30 per month to use stock art. I don't have £30 per month and stock art is typically horrible.
I could copy-paste the horrible, horrible meme images that every one else copy-pastes. Not gonna happen.
I could learn to draw. I am actually pretty good at that but I don't have the hours I would need to illustrate my newsletters.
The best option is to use AI art. Its actually fun to generate and, with a little bit of patience, its actually really good.
I'm gonna continue to use AI art. Come check it out!
